Farming ranks as one of the top industries in South Central Missouri, and Wright County is among the leaders. It has earned the distinction of being ranked as the number one milk-producing county in Missouri. Beef cattle and the lumber industry also play important roles in the areas economy.

As the largest city for a 40-mile radius, Mountain Grove serves as a farm center for the surrounding area by offering access to feed mills, implement and dairy equipment dealers, transport companies, livestock auctions and veterinary services.

Further contributing to the local economy is the State Fruit Experiment Station of Southwest Missouri State University. Established in Mountain Grove around the turn of the century, the Fruit Station is a research and advisement center serving the fruit industry, home fruit growers and Missouri consumers. Ozarks Gold Apples, Ozarks Premium Plums and Loring Peaches are but a few of the varieties released by the Fruit Station. The Station has also played a vital role in the development of the blueberry and in Missouri's grape and wine industries.
